The vitória-régia lays its leaves flat on the black Amazon water, each one a near-perfect circle wide enough to lie across. They look like a handful of rain would tear them. It wouldn't. The undersides are ribbed like architecture, and a single leaf can hold a small child without going under. Strength is the last thing the forest bothers to advertise. A line of round sapphires closes into a circle at the wrist — light to the eye, built to hold. The flower never explained how a thing that floats could also carry weight. The bracelet doesn't explain it either.
