For most of the year the quaresmeira is an ordinary tree, easy to walk past without a second look. Then Lent comes and it loses all restraint — every branch turns to flower at once, not a leaf left showing, a full crown of color that stops people in the street.
One bloom on its own is a soft, quiet thing. Thousands at once are not. The tree never learned to be delicate and unnoticed at the same time.
White crystal at the center, citrine and peridot set around it like light caught under a petal.
