The vitória-régia lays its leaves flat on the black Amazon water, each one a near-perfect circle wide enough to lie across. They look like a handful of rain would tear them. It wouldn't. A line of round sapphires closes into a circle at the wrist — light to the eye, built to hold. The flower never explained how a thing that floats could also carry weight.
